Gauderman氏は、The Effect of Air Pollution on Lung Development from 10 to 18 Years of Age（2004、共著）において、大気汚染と呼吸機能検査所見との関連性を検討した結果を発表している。それによると、調査時の大気汚染レベルは10〜18 歳の児童における肺の発達に慢性的で有害な影響を及ぼし，児童が成人に達したときにも一秒量（最大呼気時に最初の１秒間で息を最大どれくらい吐き出せるか、その空気の量）などに影響を及ぼす。
